Re:       Display Energy Certificate

            S.I. 591 of 2008

            Energy Performance of Building Regulations

Please note that some of our schools have received notices as quoted below from their respective local authorities.  Schools are advised to check the relevant websites for detailed information in order to comply with the Display Energy Certificate regulations.

“From 1st January 2009 all public buildings, including schools, with a gross internal floor area greater than 1000m² are required to display a Display Energy Certificate (DEC) in a prominent place clearly visible to the public. This requirement is a consequence of the transposition into Irish legislation of Articles 5 and 7 of the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.

The DEC for large public buildings is calculated as an operational rating, where the actual energy consumed in the building is compared to a benchmark for buildings of the same type, and shown on the certificate A-G scale in terms of primary energy. There is also a CO2 indicator which shows the CO2 emissions associated with the building’s energy consumption.

The Department of Education, in consultation with Sustainable Energy Ireland, has developed a website for primary and secondary schools to facilitate the generation of Display Energy Certificates: www.energyeducation.ie. Only ratings calculated through this process will be valid for display in schools.

Local Authorities will shortly be checking that Display Energy Certificates are displayed in schools, as required.

Further information or copies of the relevant legislation are available to download from the DoEHLG website: www.environ.ie or from the SEI website: www.sei.ie.”

Is mise,

le mór mheas,
