Revised Annual Leave Arrangements for Clerical Officers employed in Post-primary Schools are outlined in DES CL 10/2014

This revised arrangement took effect from January 7, 2014. With effect from 2014 personnel will on recruitment or promotion be placed with immediate effect on a new standardised annual leave band with a minimum of 22 days.

Existing staff will also be entitled to 22 days annual leave.

The above circular gives details of how historically based local leave arrangements such as for example festival and race days, privilege days, Church holy days, etc. are now abolished. In circumstances where staff wish to take leave for such purposes it must now be taken from their annual leave allowance.

Permanent Caretaking Staff

The leave entitlement of permanent Caretaking Staff is 22 days, plus public holidays and Good Friday, in respect of any leave year and may be exercised only at times suitable and agreeable to the school authorities.

Part-time Caretaking Staff, Cleaning Staff, Secretarial Staff

All employees, regardless of status or service, qualify for paid holidays. All time worked qualifies for paid holiday leave.

Under the terms of the Organisation of Working Time Act, 1997, an employee is entitled to paid annual leave equal to: -

    • One-third of a working week for each month in the leave year in which s/he works at least 117 hours, or

    • 8% of the hours s/he works in a leave year (but subject to a maximum of 4 working weeks).

Part-time employees who have worked a total of 40 hours over a 5 week period ending immediately before a public holiday are entitled to payment for such holiday.
