Allocations
Teacher Allocation
An initial allocation of Teaching Posts for the following school year is issued in January/February of each year by the Department of Education and Youth.
This allocation is calculated in accordance with the school’s recognised pupil enrolment on approved courses on 30th September of the previous year.
The Allocation Circular 0027/2026 sets out details of the approved teaching posts for the 2026/27 school year.
The Initial Staffing Schedule outlines allocations under the following headings:
Principal/Deputy Principal and enrolment-based allocation, including PTR, Guidance and Junior Cycle Reform;
100% Special Education Needs allocation;
SET Co-ordination allocation;
Programme Co-Ordinator allocation;
Home School Community Liaison allocation;
Behaviour for Learning Programme allocation; and
Special Class allocation.
The DEIS Plus Scheme provides enhanced, targeted supports for schools with the highest levels of concentrated educational disadvantage.
From a post-primary allocations perspective, the scheme applies to 25 schools and may include the following supports:
Deputy Principal allocation under Section A, with a possible increase depending on enrolment;
Positive Mental Health and Wellbeing allocation of 1.00 under Section B; and
Guidance DEIS recalculation under Section C.
The specific criteria on which the approved allocations are based from time to time will accompany the schedule. Staffing Arrangements in community and comprehensive schools for the 2026/27 school year contains the criteria for the year 2026/27 school year.
