Marriage Leave

Teachers

Purpose

A teacher may apply for Leave for their own marriage/wedding/civil partnership.

This leave is applicable only when the wedding takes place on a day when the school is due to be open.

A teacher is allowed 7 consecutive days from the date of the marriage, wedding or civil partnership. These days include the date of the marriage, wedding or civil partnership. These days include weekends and any school closure e.g. bank holiday, vacation days etc.

Cover type

Substitute cover is not paid by the Department to cover the teacher taking Marriage Leave. The teacher must arrange their own cover (usually a colleague) to cover their classes. Marriage Leave is not covered through the Supervision & Substitution Scheme

Circular Letter

No circular for the post primary sector. Refer to circular 32/2007 for primary schools on Personal Leave Absence.


Special Needs Assistants

Purpose

A SNA may apply for Leave for their own marriage/wedding/civil partnership.

This leave is applicable only when the wedding takes place during the school term. If the marriage occurs during the holidays, no leave in lieu is allowable.

An SNA is allowed 7 consecutive days from the date of the marriage. These days include the date of the marriage. These days include weekends and any school closure e.g. bank holiday, vacation days etc.

Cover type

Substitution is paid by the Department.

SNA Information Hub

An SNA is allowed 1 day for the wedding of an immediate family member. An immediate family member means child or adoptive child, a person to whom the SNA is in loco parentis, a brother or sister, or a parent. This is applicable only if the wedding takes place on a day when the school is open.
