Parental Leave

Purpose

Available to each ‘relevant parent’ of a child in the first two years of the child’s birth/adoption (i.e. a teacher who is a parent of the child, the spouse, civil partner or cohabitant of a parent of the child or a parent of a donor conceived child).

Maximum Period

9 weeks – may be taken in a 9-week period or in separate periods of no less than 1 week.

Parent’s Leave must be taken within 24 months from the date of birth or in the case of adoption, the day of placement of the child.

Paid/unpaid for teacher

Unpaid.

Parent’s Benefit may be available subject to PRSI contributions
